fuck that’s depressingly accurate

To be fair, DC had already done Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. And they didn’t realize how successful having an entire interconnected movie-verse would be.
Of course, then they made Green Lantern which was supposed to be the first of the DC Cinematic Universe, but bombed because it was terrible, so they scrapped that plan.

Also, Watchmen isn’t even mainline canon to the DCu.
It’s a gorram Vertigo comic, therefore not linked in with ANY of the mainline DC comics.
Since folks don’t get this: DC has two print houses under its brolly.
DC (also refered to as the DCu), which is your regular capes and spandex fare.
Vertigo, which is much less capes and spandex, much more murder, mayhem, and mystery.
While, yes, Watchman was a DC film, ditto V for Vendetta, they’re both not a DC comic. They’re VERTIGO comics.
Please. PLEASE consider that.
(Also, traditionally, DC’s done better with one off style films because of how the DCu works within the comics. )

Just a quick note: Watchmen is not at all a Vertigo comic.  It really seems like it should be, and if it had been published later I’m sure it would have been.  But Watchmen came out seven years before Vertigo was founded.  So yeah, it’s totally DC.
